State Studies
Hands-On Ideas for 3

There are so many good programs that have come out recently to aid homeschool families to learn more about each of the states that are part of our great nation. This is good and bad!! It is so hard to choose which one will work best.

I am planning on using something when we begin work on Cores 3 and 4. What an exciting adventure! Now if only I could afford to visit 1 state a month during our studies......

Cantering The Country

This is the sequel to GTG, which will take you around the United States to learn about each state.  Check GeoMatters for sample pages. This was recently released and now available for purchase! It is said to contain even more information than GTG and will take longer to complete. This would probably be best used on its own in between cores 2 and 3.

Simply Stated

From the reviews of friends that are close to me -- this appears to be a simplified version of Cantering the Country. This maybe a great option for those planning on using a state study program as a supplement to there regular program -- especially if combing with a core program and you want to accomplish both in a year's time.

Trail Guide To The U.S.

I have had my eye on this program since before my oldest was old enough to be homeschooled! BUT I thought it was geared for older children and was planning on using it in high school. For some reason, this is what I had in my head. Recently, however, a friend mentioned using this with a child just 2 years older than my son which made me go searching for information on this product again. I found out a couple things. 1 -- it now has a cd with all the notebooking pages on it! : -)  and 2 -- it has 3 levels of study so you can use it with just about any student and is even is perfectly for use with large families. All the kids can do it together. Now the question is .... do I use it with Kris NOW or wait until I can use it with all 3 boys together??

Hold That Thought State Studies

This is another great product that I have recently discovered. While it does have notebooking pages for each individual state, I feel that this program is better suited to meet State History requirements rather than an in general study of the states and capitals. My plan is to use this product with Core 4 to study Arizona in depth - as that is where we live.
