Hands-On Ideas for 2
Chapter Books

A Series of Unfortunate Events There are several books in this series.

   Adventures of Tom Sawyer

   Holes

How to Eat Fried Worms This is a great boy book! We read it as an extra read aloud for Core 1.

Magic School Bus chapter book series

Magic Tree House series These have some historical information in it but it is basically twaddle. However, these were the first chapter books my son read and he loved them. They are great fun reads for ones just beginning to need chapter books.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle and sequels This book is part of Core 2 but you can read the sequels after reading it with the core.

A Cricket in Times Square This is part of Core 2

   A Wrinkle in Time Series

Agatha Christie Mysteries These were written for adults but have been recommend as good chapter books for children by some other homeschool moms I know. I would suggest pre-reading any of the titles before using them with your children.

Captain Underpants This is nothing but twaddle but again it was written to get little boys to read and it certainly does do that. This has a lot of bathroom humor in it and sometimes not so appropriate language. I recall the word idiot being used frequently in these books.

Catwings series by Ursula Le Guin These are very short chapter books. These I would use with a child still using leveled readers as an introduction to chapter books. Each chapter is about 3 or 4 pages and every page has illustrations.
